We begin by examining the influence of earlier defined narrative attributes of pulp fiction on early Superman comics in the late 1930s, helping to form these comics as an expansive storyworld, built across multiple comic books and newspaper strips. I also touch upon the utilisation of active audience participation at this time, a key component of transmedia today, on the continuing transmedial development of Superman in the early 1940s by exploring the character’s popular Superman Day. Subsequently, the chapter moves on to explore how the same pulp narrative strategies specified earlier – those being narrative implication and expansion, seriality and retroactive linkages – manifested in the media of radio and cinema, hence revealing how pulp-orientated narratology enabled the Superman storyworld to be built and expand across media as an exemplar of historical transmedia storytelling.

The episodes take their inspiration from the films rather than from Howard’s stories or Marvel’s comic books, but lack any narrative continuity. Once again the storyline is quite different: Conan has become a sort of Robin Hood-like figure, fighting the same villain in each episode, the evil Wizard-King HissaZul, and his band of unlikely companions (Otli, a comical dwarf; Vulkar, a Viking-like warrior and Zzeben, an agile mute). In the pilot (freely adapted from Howard’s ‘The Tower of the Elephant’), Conan escapes from slavery and acquires the magic Sword of Atlantis at the end of a series of trials.
